Every four years, the world comes to a halt to watch the World Cup. So in good spirit for the coveted cup, we thought we’d join in with the celebrations, comparing the key characteristics that can be found in both a team player and an ideal candidate!
1/ Shared Values and Goals
Having shared values is an extremely important factor when it comes to hiring the right candidate and the same goes for being part of England’s national team. Every player needs to be able to fit in with the team in order to become a cohesive unit and get the desired results.
This is the same for a candidate going through the recruitment process. During the interview and various other stages of the application, candidates will be asked questions to determine if they align with the company culture – ensuring a good fit early on is key to future success.
The ideal candidate should share the same values that the company strives for and should be able to come in and instantly click with the team. Essentially, whether on the pitch or in the office, a player/candidate will have to work alongside others to assist in scoring goals and getting the results needed.
2/ Demonstrate Strong Competitiveness and drive
Every great player has a competitive element to their personality and thrives on winning. The hunger to succeed is what makes athletes successful within their sport.
This is also true for the ideal candidate. Organisations ideally want a driven candidate that is determined and motivated to succeed. Although innate qualities such as intelligence and talent play a factor in success, hard work and determination are just as important. Ronaldo hasn’t mastered that magic free kick from just raw talent – he practises day in, day out to perfect it and get the results for his team.
Dedicating enough focus and determination on any task is ultimately what makes an expert. So, if a candidate can demonstrate they are willing to put in the hard graft, they will surely succeed.
3/ Strong Leadership
Another key skill that is essential both on and off the field is leadership. To become a good leader, a candidate or player must have the willingness and desire to accept responsibility for results. Each individual needs to show that they have the ability to develop, grow and progress – so in the future they will be able to create their own winning teams.
A good leader will not make any excuses, push themselves to achieve common goals and commit to performing at a higher level. No pressure then, Harry Kane!
4/ Good Team Worker
Being able to work in a team is one of the most sought-after soft skills out there. On the football pitch, a team is only as strong as their weakest member – and the same goes for organisations.
Teamwork is key to success. A candidate’s willingness to work as part of a team can be one of the most attractive things to an employer. Although each player has a different role, they all come together to help each other out when needed. This also applies for businesses – not only does everyone within a team need to work together to achieve goals, but every department needs to align to the company wide objectives.
